Micro:bit coding in Primary Schools
Over the last six years I have been teaching primary pupils on how to code micro:bits with school workshops and coding clubs
Coding micro:bits in schools
- Does your school have a set of BBC micro:bits?
- Would you like your students and staff to be confident in using micro:bits?
- Have you got laptops or iPads?
If the answer is "Yes" to these three questions then maybe I can help.
What can micro:bits do?
- Display messages, pictures and animations
- Play music
- Count steps (step counter)
- Navigate (make a compass)
- Be used as a die to help play a boardgame
- Practice times tables
- Play games
- Create alarms
- Control robotic vehicles to move
- Create flashing light sequences
plus lots more!
Coding Club at St Margarets
Testimonial by Mrs De Sousa (Computing Lead)
Over the course of 12 weeks, Carl successfully led an after-school Coding Club that significantly enriched pupils’ Computing experiences beyond the classroom. His sessions provided opportunities for children to deepen their understanding of key computing concepts and apply them in creative, practical ways.
Carl demonstrated strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm, which he used effectively to engage and inspire pupils. His sessions were well-planned and aligned with the aims of the National Curriculum for Computing, focusing on developing computational thinking, logical reasoning, and programming skills.
Children made notable progress in their coding abilities throughout the club. They were encouraged to explore coding through problem-solving tasks and hands-on activities, which both consolidated their prior learning and introduced new challenges.
Pupils were consistently enthusiastic to attend the club and displayed a growing curiosity about how technology works.
Carl fostered a positive learning environment where children felt confident to experiment, collaborate, and ask questions. His ability to explain complex concepts clearly and encourage resilience in debugging code helped pupils develop not only their technical skills but also their perseverance and independence.
The Coding Club has had a measurable impact on pupils’ engagement in Computing, and Carl’s contribution has been highly valued.
